    It is something I have been considering for awhile. How slowing down and doing less, means you actually get more done. I was on the radio on Thursday discussing how we can achieve the same results in less time, with less stress, so that people don't need to work such long hours (I was going to post a link, but can't find the archive on the BBC site, sorry)

    One of the problems I have discovered in trying to take Slow into the working environment is that it is ingrained with the believe that time is intrinsically linked to productivity, the longer you work, the more you get done.

    Personally I blame Benjamin Franklin (well, he is a good a target as any!), when he said, “Remember that time is money” in Advice to a Young Tradesman. Since then we have acted as if time equals money (or productivity).

    This of course is nonsense, and we have known this for a long time. A Home Office report into Industrial Fatigue 1916 stated “[output] is lowered by working over-time. The diminution is often so great that the total daily output is less when overtime is worked than when it is suspended. Thus overtime defeats in own object”.

    I have always been disinterested in the time = productivity idea and even when I had a proper job, I used to get in trouble with my bosses all the time for letting my team go early and work flexibility hours (even though there was no official “flexitime” policy). I had the attitude that as long as you got the work you were meant to do done, to the right standard, I didn’t care how long you worked!

    Of course, a large part of the problem is people think they need to seen to be working long hours otherwise they will be labelled as lazy and in the next round of job cuts they will top of the list.

    To really get people to slow down I think we need to demonstrate that Slow working practices are not just as good as the current paradigm, but in fact MORE productive! So that managers and business owners change their beliefs that their staff have to work long hours and encourage and implement alternative working practices.

    This is so true. We are locked into a 19th-century mindset when it comes to time in the workplace. Rather than focus on the quality of work, we obsess about how long it takes to complete. This may have worked (up to a point) during the Industrial Revolution when most workers didn't have to think very hard about the task at end but it no longer washes in the New Economy. The future now lies in creativity, innovation and value-added - and all of those are best served when we stop counting the minutes and seconds and immerse ourselves in our work. This is hard for many managers to accept. Bosses like to be in control, and the easiest way to control your staff is to micromanage their schedules. The irony is that a lot of companies would benefit from relinquishing that control. By saying to workers: "Here is the project.. You work out how you want to schedule the time between now and the deadline. All we're asking is that you deliver the best results possible on time."

    Many companies already understand the benefit of giving staff control over their own time - think of flexible working hours, for instance. Or of Google's practice of allowing many of its key staff to dedicate 20% of their working to personal projects - no targets, no timetables, no quarterly reviews. This isn't Google going all soft and fuzzy; it is simply that the most successful company in history understands that some of its best ideas for the future will emerge from that 20% of unstructured time.

    The problem now is that the credit crunch and recession are sewing panic, and when people panic they seek refuge in the familiar. That means companies returning to a more command-and-control approach to timekeeping (including the longer overtime hours mentioned in this BBC report). The challenge, as SlowCoach, says is to make the case that this is not the time to turn back the clock. On the contrary, it's time to cast off the clock.

    I think Carl, unfortunately, hit the nail a bit on the head. People cannot see how slowing down can help them in the current social and economic environment. They automatically run for shelter in what they know and what they think they should be doing to get through it. Which is do more and do it faster!

    “Slow down, I understand the intentions of your latest pet project, I don't actually feel it is a feasible mindset currently. Desirable? Yes, absolutely. Practical? No.

    That was a very brief sum up of my thoughts on what you're trying to do and I actually do agree with your intent. But sadly I feel now is not the right time to try and get people to manage their lifestyles better. But as I say - the reality of current life makes it nigh on impossible for people to appreciate the theory of what you are saying, let alone put it into practice. Current lifestyles and the socio-economic requirements mean people will be very resistant and lacking in the will, desire or long sightedness required to even consider, let alone appreciate your campaign.”

    Even if people get the philosophy they may not make the connection to practical benefits RIGHT NOW.

    My idea is to take the philosophy of slow and show (and teach people) practical strategies that show a demonstrable and positive change in their lifestyle.

Look back through the history books. Every time a seismic cultural shift has been proposed (abolishing slavery, feminism, environmentalism, etc), the mainstream has said the same thing: "You can't do that - the world has always been this way and always will be. We are locked into a socio-economic model with no way out. Change is impossible."

    Phooey, I say. To borrow a phrase from Nike: "Impossible is nothing." There are moments in history when everything is called into question, and we're coming into one of those moments now thanks to the failure of the financial system. The old sacred cows and nostrums are no longer beyond debate. If we're going to make a new and better world, this is the time to strike - to be bold rather than timid. It won't be easy, especially in the short term, but what is the alternative? To go back to what we had before, rushing around like a flock of shopaholic headless chickens? Change is only impossible when we think it is....

    Innovation is a creature of necessity. And I have read in a number of papers/journals that a recession is the very time when innovation and creativity get a boost. So maybe we shouldn't write off Slowness at work just yet.

    I think it's a gradual thing - Slow burn if you like. People like you, SlowCoach, in your old job sow the seeds. Hopefully those seeds have been nurtured by some of your team and bear fruit in their working lives, and those of any people they go on to manage. And, in turn, those employees will inspire others and open their eyes to the fact there are different ways, better and kinder ways, of living and working.
