Albert Cossery was my favorite writer. He combined by own sentiments of life with the aspects of the lives of the poor Egyptian people I found appealing during the time I spent there. I regret never studying French, and having studied Arabic instead, for I would love to read his books in their original language.
For a period I did live a version of the Albert Cossery lifestyle. I did it in New York City which is no small feat because of the high cost-of-living, i.e. housing here. I didn't heed the proclamation of one of his characters that he never wanted to marry. Why? Because a wife or woman will make him work for her. Yes, that is what has happened to me... I am looking forward to the soon-publication of two of his novels. I have pre-ordered them and will look forward to reading them...
His characters didn't drop out in to decadence, they dropped out to feel life and have the comfort of experiencing their thoughts and emotions in a contemplative minute-by-minute manner.
