What a breath of fresh air from Bernadette and Slow Family Living. Parents need the confidence to find their own recipe for child-rearing. There is no magic formula that works for everyone, despite what the gurus and TV experts tell us.

I've just published an article on the need for parents to ease off in the New Humanist. Here is the link: http://newhumanist.org.uk/1960.

"Then there is the peer pressure: if everyone else is in 24/7 phone contact with their kids, then I must be a bad parent for failing to do the same."
I think the above statement is the hard part for a lot of parents - falling victim to the ongoing pressure to conform to everyone else's standards. At Slow Family Living we are trying to give people tools to figure out what works for them - not for everyone else - and then live their life accordingly.

Rather than constantly monitor our children, I think we ought to teach them a little bit about listening to and following their own instinct. That will keep them out of a lot more danger than a real time monitoring device.

Nice post. Thank you.

Hi Carl,

Very good point and it actually touches on the much wider subject of abundance of real-time information. Does it really, really help if we can for example monitor a business minute-by-minute, monitoring its activities in fine-grained detail...? Think I will dedicate a separate blog-item on that soon.
